There are four basic screen printing approaches, from spot color for simple designs to simulated process photographic reproduction on dark garments.

The most common type of printing for basic designs and logos with solid fill areas is called spot color screen printing. Most common form of commercial screen printing due to cost, and durability.   Similar to spot color but incorporating gradients of those colors to give depth to a design, yet not as complicated as a full color process design. Available for more advanced designs than normally available with spot color. Photographic reproduction on white or light garments or bags is done using CYMK, or four color process screen printing.  This proczess uses between 4-6 screens, depending on base colors of the design, and the locations involved. Photographic reproduction on colored or dark garments is done using simulated process screen printing.  This is the most difficult and costly type of screen printing and uses between 8-10 screens. Very expensive, Large orders are required.

A VECTOR FILE is an image composed of paths. The terms outlines, curves, fonts, and spot colors are commonly used when discussing this file type. These files are usually created in Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw. Common file extensions are pdf, eps, ai and cdr.

A RASTER FILE is an image composed of pixels. The terms resolution, redraw and separations are commonly used when discussing this file type. These files are usually scanned, taken from the web or created in Adobe Photoshop. Common file extensions are .jpg, .gif, .tif, .bmp, .png and .pdf.

-Blurry Edges

-Requires extensive reworking

-Colors are spotty and vary due to compression techniques

-Lose quality when image is made large enough to put on apparel.
